What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join our microelectronics team at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies. This role is dedicated to the development and implementation of multi-modal materials characterization platforms for microelectronics. You will be responsible for circuit design, simulation, layout, and tapeout to support system development. This work requires being located (or relocating) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to participate in our vibrant, interdisciplinary research community at Sandia National Laboratories and CINT (https://cint.lanl.gov/).

As Postdoctoral appointee you will pursue research in semiconductor materials, devices, and circuits. The research will involve integrated circuit layout and tapeout, device fabrication, materials characterization, and electrical measurements for device integration.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Design integrated circuits and oversee device fabrication.
  • Design and execute experiments aimed at understanding materials challenges for integrating functionalities with CMOS.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team, including experimentalists and theorists, with experience in semiconductor physics and devices.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline
  • Experience with at least one of the following:
  • Integrated circuit layout and tapeout
  • Device fabrication
  • Electrical characterization of solid-state materials and devices
  • Embedded systems, microcontrollers, and FPGAs
  • Instrumentation and data analysis using one of the following languages:
  • Python
  • Matlab
  • C+
  • + A strong record of technical achievement, as evidenced by first-author publications in scientific journals. (A publication list should be included as part of the resume.)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with cryogenic systems below 10 Kelvin.
  • Experience with materials characterization using a selection of the following techniques: x-rays, electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, Raman microscopy, photoluminescence, and photocurrent.
  • Cleanroom experience

About Our Team:

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies is a Department of Energy-funded nanoscience research facility that provides users from around the world with access to state of the art expertise and instrumentation in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment with a focus on nanoscience integration. The Quantum Materials Systems (QMS) thrust at CINT has a focus on understanding and controlling quantum effects of nanoscale materials and their integration into systems spanning multiple length scales. The QMS thrust has world-leading capabilities in synthesis, fabrication, characterization, and modeling of quantum materials, devices, and computing systems. Our synthesis capabilities range from novel 2-D materials to ultrahigh mobility quantum well structures. We also have design and fabrication capabilities for integrating superconducting Josephson-junction devices and superconducting resonator circuits into various semiconductor platforms. CINT has a state-of-the-art cleanroom facility that permits micro- and nanoscale fabrication of quantum devices and systems, and we have a variety of characterization equipment that allows temperature-dependent measurements down to dilution refrigerator temperatures with both high- and low-frequency electrical characterization. These efforts are supported by extensive modeling capabilities that exist at both CINT and the host lab.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
