Job Description

The Data Center Operations group, part of the University of Alaska’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), is seeking a full-time Data Center Technician and this could be the position for you.As our Data Center Technician, you will monitor the status of the UA System Office’s statewide computer network, enterprise applications, hosted computer systems, and data center infrastructure, resolving or escalating any issues as needed. The Data Center Technician on duty maintains the security of the state-of-the-art Data Center, monitors the building’s video surveillance system, performs hardware installations, assists in tracking power distribution, and may also provide after-hours Service Desk support. You must be able to work shift work and overtime in a 24x7x365 data center, and must be comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
The Data Center Technician is an essential role, being a 24x7 point of contact for customers for all data center issues. You are expected to assist the Senior and Lead Operations Technicians, ensuring or covering staffing as needed and sharing in any necessary overtime. You will be expected to provide a high level of customer service to end users, OIT, and other System Office departments.
This position requires flexibility and adaptability to the ever-changing world of IT while maintaining mission-critical statewide business, arctic research, emergency services, and life safety computing systems. With the speed of business, the Data Center Technician must have strong written and verbal communication skills to convey essential information about the Data Center to technical and non-technical audiences.
To thrive in this role you must have knowledge and understanding for many critical systems within the Butrovich Data Center (BDC). You must have professional working proficiency and knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, and IT support experience or training. This position assists with power tracking of the Data Center facility by helping maintain power tracking documentation. You must have knowledge and/or experience with data center operations, software automation tools, and production-oriented software.
You will utilize knowledge of monitoring essential systems and services. As well as detailed knowledge of operating systems and console commands on the following, but not limited to, operating systems: Unix and Windows. Having detailed familiarity with mechanical cooling, electrical power conditioning, and distribution systems.
You must have the ability to effectively communicate technical information; both verbal and written. You must have a working knowledge of production-oriented software applications: financial, payroll, student, problem/change tracking, software automation tools, system management, Microsoft Windows & LAN based tools.
Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent. 1 year college coursework in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology or other related field) and 1 year experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Position Details:
This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 76, based on education and experience.
