What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Communications & Electrical Systems Technologies Department is seeking a highly motivated Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team. Our department focuses on embedded electronics, electrical and RF technologies for a wide variety of national security missions in the Transportation Safety and Security Programs (TSSP). The selected candidate will have demonstrated the ability to lead projects in a dynamic team environment, sharing resources as well as programmatic responsibilities across teams.
In this technical leadership role, you will be working on Systems Integration, Vulnerability Analysis, and Transportation Surety and Security Technical Basis.
On any given day, you may be called upon to:
- Develop roadmap and implementation plans for the sustainment of future transportation programs and collaborate across Global and National Security programs and the Stockpile Systems to define requirements and resources.
- Define and develop processes to implement the framework for system vulnerability analyses (SVA), ensuring the safety and security of transportation missions from the outset. Additionally, ensure effective documentation development, communication, and storage to maintain project integrity and accessibility.
- Support development activities of the Mobile Guardian Transporter (MGT), Integrated Surety Assurance (ISA), and sustainment of Safe Guardian Transporter (SGT), including testing, qualification and surveillance activities.
- Collaborate closely with system, mechanical, electrical, computer engineers & scientists, and technologists on designing, modifying, and implementing hardware and software, as well as giving guidance to design testers and fixtures.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$114,000 - $227,500
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Current active DOE Q-level security clearance or DOD equivalent.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D S&E, Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
- Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Physical protection system design and implementation.
- Nuclear weapon use-control and safety design principles and practices.
- SGT or nuclear weapons surveillance and sustainment processes.
- Authoring annual assessment reports of systems, such as annual fleet assessment and annual surveillance report.
- Working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Y-12, Savana River Site, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
- Engineering design, qualification, production of embedded electronics, or related modeling/simulation projects.
- Working on cross-functional technical teams to meet mission critical deliverables and milestones.
- Delivering high rigor systems, production, product development and qualification, testing and evaluation.
About Our Team:
The Communications and Electrical Systems Technology Department is responsible for the development and integration of command, control, and communication technologies used in specialized transportation security systems. The department conducts research and development activities in the areas of high consequence software systems, custom embedded circuit design, wireless network communications, intelligent power conditioning and distribution, navigation systems, and sensors. Major programs supported by the department include the Safeguards Transporter (SGT), development of a new high security system called the Mobile Guardian Transporter (MGT) and an advanced concept surety programs called Integrated Surety Architectures (ISA). Robust security protection for transportation systems face many unique challenges, and requires exhaustive investigation and analysis of sophisticated system attacks and the associated development of countermeasures to defend and protect against such attacks. The use of modeling and simulation tools assists in the investigation, exploration, and development of new design approaches, algorithms, and design of experiments to validate system capabilities.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
