The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) helps protect Australia’s multi-billion-dollar livestock and aquaculture industries, and the general public, from emerging infectious disease threats. It is a high-containment facility designed to allow scientific research into the most dangerous infectious agents in the world.


This is an exciting opportunity to join the Dangerous Pathogens team within the Health & Biosecurity (H&B) business unit, based at the ACDP contributing to our research on the high consequence pathogens (including but not limited to Nipah, Ebola or Influenza) and work in the high containment facility managing research projects and contracts in a collaborative environment with a focus on immunology, multi-omics, vaccines/therapeutics and pathogenesis models development.

 

If you’re experience senior research professional with expertise in virology with focus in infectious diseases and knowledge of other disciplines and independently managed research milestone and demonstrated achievement to formulate, develop and complete an approved research program along with a dynamic team, then do not hesitate to apply! The appointee must be able to meet ACDP Security Assessment and Microbiological Security Requirements for personnel working on the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) site.
 

Your duties will include:

  • Develop research projects in alignment with the strategic priorities for the program and the business unit.
  • Provide strategic inputs to the research direction and conducting high quality science.
  • Develop and deliver on collaborative research programs in emerging infectious disease area for customers, including vaccines and therapeutics. 
  • Build and maintain alliances and networks that help maintain and grow the business, including representing the team in partnerships, conferences, networking, promotions, etc.
  • Maintain awareness of advances to scientific knowledge and technology and be receptive to original and innovative concepts of others and willing to integrate these into their programs. 
  • Delivery of high-quality animal or non-animal research studies for evaluation of human and zoonotic pathogens under BSL3 & 4 containment.
  • Lead and supervise staff to ensure experiments are established in accordance with the research design and are completed within the agreed timeframes and budget.
  • Act as a trusted advisor, utilising knowledge of the clients’ business and understanding of their underlying needs. 

 

Location: Geelong – Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), VIC

Salary: AU$126k - AU$148k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • A PhD in a relevant field such as infectious diseases, virology, immunology.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
  • Significant understanding and prior experience working in infectious diseases area (high risk pathogens) with focus on immunology or multi-omics.
  • The ability to work effectively as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary research team, and foster an environment in which there is a high level of co-operation within and between teams. 

 

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in working in BSL3/4 containment
  • Relevant experience and awareness in preclinical studies for vaccines and therapeutics.
