The Department of Chemistry at Tennessee State University, a public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) located in Nashville, Tennessee, seeks an innovative and visionary leader to serve as the next Department Chair of Chemistry to begin August 2024. The ideal candidate should support and encourage a culture of diverse scholarship, teaching, and service activities as well as foster a climate of collaboration and collegiality. The Department of Chemistry offers academic programs leading to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. The Department seeks to increase its stature and reputation nationally and internationally, while maintaining its culture of teaching and research excellence. The Department Chair will be responsible for working with the department faculty and staff in an open and participatory manner, recruitment efforts, assisting in the development of curricula and new programs, making recommendations to the Dean regarding all personnel matters including evaluation of faculty and staff, and administering all department budgets. This is a 12-month administrative position with a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate/Professor. Applicants may be eligible for tenure through the tenure review process.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned terminal degree (PhD preferred) in Chemistry or a related field with at least 18 graduate hours in Chemistry from an accredited institution.

-A strong record of successful leadership, including faculty and student mentoring, program and curriculum innovation, and the cultivation and promotion of a shared vision among colleagues.
-Administrative experience, including budgeting, in a department, college, or university setting.
-An understanding/record of promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity.
-Record of excellence in teaching, reflective of current and best practices.
-Experience working with colleagues in multiple specialties or disciplines.
-A record of professional service and community engagement at department, college, university, discipline, and/or community levels.
-Interest in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
-HBCU experience
