What Your Job Will Be Like:

The W80-4/B61-12 JTA Systems Engineering Department has an immediate opening for a Test Operations Engineer to serve on the W80-4 JTA team. The Test Operations Engineer will work closely with the Dept manager, the JTA Test Lead, and the broader W80-4 team at SNL. Additional opportunities exist for interaction across the broader program communities for the W80-4, including Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, Pantex, and DoD partners integral to conducting the series of development system tests for qualification of the W80-4 JTA. Close interaction with key individuals across these organizations and coordination of test-related technical and programmatic details is an integral to success in this position. The JTA Test Operations Engineer position will provide the successful candidate significant career growth opportunities.

Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems engineers within the Dept play a critical role in specifying and reviewing activities involving all aspects of the W80-4 and B61-12 JTA systems to establish flight test surveillance programs for these LEPs. The role of this E&O Test Operations Engineer position is to partner closely with the JTA engineer team in the execution of system level testing, and troubleshooting to resolve issues that arise during testing. Critical thinking skills are required to understand and resolve issues that arise during integration testing during development phases of Nuclear Deterrence (ND) modernization programs. Specific responsibilities of the Dept include: design, development, and qualification of the JTA system to closely simulate weapon performance in a surveillance environment, development of JTA system and component requirements, design and assembly of several different test units during development stages of the program, production support activities for JTA components, and testing of development ground and flight test units leading up to final JTA qualification.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Assist and conduct programmatic and technical planning for W80-4 JTA system integration tests (functional electrical, mechanical, thermal, ground and integration tests, as well as flight tests). This includes authoring test procedures and other administrative test documentation, supporting readiness reviews, and coordination of test facilities as required.
  • Determine conditions under which tests are to be conducted, establish and maintain safety and security requirements for W80-4 JTA testing in lab and field settings.
  • Identify test related issues before or as they arise, and troubleshoot issues to understand underlying causes. Provide suggestions for solutions and inform decisions required by the JTA/WR Systems team to move forward with testing.
  • Assist in analysis and interpretation of test data, prepare technical reports of test results and lessons learned (author or co-author).

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at the Albuquerque, NM location.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field with five or more years of relevant experience; or 13 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree. Equivalent experience must be directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
  • Experience working on an ND test team

  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Active US DOE Q-level security clearance, or equivalent DOD Top Secret level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience on a multi-disciplinary ND test team
  • Ability to work closely with customers and partners to define requirements and mutual responsibilities
  • Experience in working with DoD personnel supporting joint DOE/DoD testing
  • Experience with Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Product Realization and familiarity with processes within the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE)
  • Experience with cybersecurity within DOE/DoD
  • Proven project or test management skills

The scope of the Dept is focused on design and development of JTA systems to closely simulate weapon performance in future surveillance programs, which forms the basis for Annual Assessment of the nuclear weapon systems. Dept scope also includes significant contributions to WR qualification through system test data collected during JTA system tests. This organization supports the Weapon Systems Engineering Centers, which are responsible for assuring the safety, reliability and security of US Nuclear weapons enabling the defense of our nation through nuclear strategic deterrent. The organization is comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers and technologists, primarily in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Systems Engineering. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
