What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) Measurements team is seeking an early career science or engineering professional who is highly motivated and able to complete external and internal training qualification programs for the performance of gamma spectroscopy measurements of special nuclear materials. The security objectives of MC&A are to deter and detect theft and diversion of accountable nuclear material according to DOE Orders for Safeguards and Security. The successful candidate will join the program lead and other Engineering Program/Project Lead team members within the MC&A Measurements program at Sandia National Laboratories!

In this position you will be involved, among other things, in coordinating security aspects of the transfers of special nuclear material with internal and external partners. The position will rely on science/engineering practices to conduct independent measurements of special nuclear material and maintain associated equipment. Experience in program/project management will aid you in facilitating some day-to-day operations for the small group of technical professionals in this sub-team as we plan out resources and tasks to be accomplished both short term and long term.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Use equipment to conduct non-destructive assay (NDA) measurements of special nuclear material in support of internal and external customers.
  • Provide technical and engineering support to one or more aspects of the MC&A Measurements program.
  • Exercise ability to calculate and analyze variances based on customer needs using specialized tools and techniques.
  • Use engineering or technical judgment, within defined scientific and engineering practices, to address technical challenges.
  • Negotiate action items and prepare resources to implement schedule needs.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or related field), or equivalent combination of related education and relevant experience.
  • Experience operating with lab equipment, testing environment, or radiation environments.
  • Technical project leadership experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-level Security Clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in MC&A Measurements technology and procedures related to nuclear material and gamma spectroscopy.
  • Experience related to nuclear mission work programs within the DOE/NNSA or DoD environment, including work at national laboratories.
  • Master’s degree in applicable field (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or related field).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
  • Experience working with and/or leading in a technical team environment with a customer service focus.
  • Security background and experience.

About Our Team:

To support the mission, multiple Sandia organizations acquire, use, and possess accountable nuclear materials. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requires all sites that possess accountable nuclear materials to establish and maintain nuclear material management (NMM) and Material Control & Accountability (MC&A) programs. Nuclear Material Management programs are designed to ensure that nuclear materials are managed as valuable assets, used appropriately, and disposed of properly when no longer needed. MC&A programs are designed to deter and detect theft and diversion of nuclear material by both outside and inside adversaries. The Nuclear Material Management/MC&A Department develops and implements effective NMM and MC&A programs that are compliant with DOE/NNSA requirements, while supporting line organizations mission objectives.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:

$90,900 - $176,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
