Position Description
The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (DGHSM) at Harvard Medical School conducts research to constantly improve the practice of medicine, the delivery of treatment, and the development of healthcare policies locally and worldwide. Researchers at DGHSM have a long history of conducting research on tuberculosis, HIV, and other conditions.


The Research Assistant will be responsible for research support for the multiple global health research projects related to tuberculosis and HIV in adolescents and young people. The Research Assistant will work as part of a team comprising staff based in Boston and at international sites (Peru, Lesotho, Kazakhstan) to support all aspects of the projects, including logistics, communications and documentation, research regulatory processes, and data quality control/assurance. The Research Assistant will collaborate closely with counterparts at Partners In Health. Proficiency in Spanish is required for this participation.


Specific Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator to support study operations for study protocols and other research activities.
  • The Research Assistant will serve as a point of contact for international site staff and will facilitate communication between Boston and international-based staff and consortium partners. This includes recording meeting minutes and participating in meetings in Spanish.
  • Assist in monitoring of study activities including day-to-day implementation, data management, quality assurance, regulations, and logistics.
  • Regularly review project systems for areas of improvement, document recommendations, and assist in improvement implementation.
  • Ability to travel internationally or domestically, as needed.
  • Work closely with Investigators and site staff to ensure high-quality data collection.
  • Support field staff in data entry training, assist site resolution of data queries and ensure timely, complete accurate data collection.
  • Compile, catalog, and maintain study documents including standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, consent forms, study forms, and IRB and other regulatory approvals at the central and site level.
  • Assists in administrative duties and other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Basic Qualifications
Two years' relevant experience. Higher education may count towards experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor and 2 years of previous work experience or equivalent.
  • Advanced degree in the health sciences, public health, or a related field, preferred.
  • Experience working in international settings, particularly in low-resource settings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in social justice, healthcare and international development.
  • Spanish fluency required.
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., SAS, Stata, R) an advantage.
Additional Information
This is a 12 month term appointment with the possibility of renewal.

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
